Studio Visit : Amanda Lucia Côté

An Interview with Amanda and a look inside her LA based Painting and Ceramics Studio

Studio Visit : Amanda Lucia Côté

Where do you live and work? Why did you choose this location?
I'm from New York and recently moved out of state for the first time to Los Angeles.

Wanted a shift in pace, sights, space, opportunity, and community.

How do you create your paintings and ceramics?
In painting, I work on primed or partially primed canvas. I begin by having an overall structure in mind, then defining the scale and direction of movement.

Underpaintings are made in acrylic with final layers finished in oil paint. I'm interested in color perception and focus on unexpected color combinations and variations in tone and temperature.

Handbuilt pottery is a slow process compared to thrown or slipcast ceramics. Pieces are cut, formed, attached and smoothed individually.

I construct tableware and vessels in porcelain and glaze patterns by hand.

As a maker, guide us through a perfect day for your practice?

An ideal day starts with coffee and toast, while planning ceramic shapes and quantities to complete.

I split time in my studio outside under the trees using my slab roller and move inside for cutting and finishing. Ending when it's too dark at sunset.

Your new collection of ceramics is uniquely you, can you tell us a bit about the inspiration behind  the forms and the hand painted patterns on the pieces?
I thought about the new Sounds Out East and my fond memories of visits to the beaches and farms on Long Island. I made new tableware shapes and bright patterns I’d want at a summer dinner party. All vessels for eating and drinking should make an everyday activity special. Looking forward to these joining the collection of magic objects in the space.

What is your creative aspiration for the next few months?

Take road trips to watercolor. I'd love to expand ceramics production to wholesale in shops and find a space to show new work.
